A one-word remark reportedly left Meghan Markle feeling “distraught” following the end of the Sussexes’ deal with Spotify. The comment, which came from the firm’s executive, Bill Simmons, called her and Prince Harry “grifters”.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex only released 12 episodes of Meghan’s podcast Archetypes – and the pair are still said to be creating content with Netflix, despite their contract being up for renewal with the streaming giant next year.
The collapse of the Spotify deal, which happened in July last year, sparked the comment – with Mr Simmons saying on a Spotify podcast: “I wish I had been involved in the ‘Meghan and Harry leave Spotify’ negotiation. The f****** grifters. That’s the podcast we should have launched with them.”
In America, the term grifters is often used to describe someone who tricks others out of money.
Amid the fallout, it was reported at the time that Meghan, a mum-of-two, was really upset about being snubbed by Spotify, a source told Closer magazine: “Meghan is distraught over this Spotify snub and the fallout that has followed. It’s totally knocked her sideways.”

An insider suggested they might need to change their strategy as a team if they want to keep making money from their content, the Daily Record reports.

The Closer magazine source said the term ‘grifters’ made her feel “humiliated”. The source added: “She can’t believe she’s been attacked so viciously and so publicly by one of their execs, and to be labelled ‘grifters’ is an utterly humiliating and gut-wrenching all-time low it’s served as a brutal reality check that things really do need to change to save their popularity.”

Her advisors have told her she should focus on solo projects to save her career. “Her team have warned her that there’s no future’ with Harry and that she needs to start working on her individual projects rather than being seen as one half of ‘Brand Sussex’,” the source claimed.

“They feel that if Meghan does more on her own, she’ll have more opportunities to save her career. It will give them breathing room and restore confidence or at least that’s the hope.”

The couple is reportedly “ignoring jealous critics” and working to rebuild their individual brands. A source revealed to RadarOnline: “People can call them money hungry and even ‘grifters’.

“Harry and Meghan think it’s all just jealous and mean people flinging stones. Meghan’s going to be the queen of Hollywood before long, and she and Harry will be raking in millions. To hell with the critics is their attitude.”
